Mercedes-Benz Korea CEO Thomas Urbach killed himself in Germany on Thursday, officials said Friday. He was 50.

Urbach was found dead at a hotel in Stuttgart where he was on a business trip, they said. It’s still unclear as to why he committed suicide, but industry sources said he had suffered from chronic depression over the past decade.

“The exact time for the incident has yet to be confirmed. We learned about his death on Thursday night,” a spokesperson for the company. “The cause (of the suicide) is said to be very private and has nothing to do with the company or his business.”

The spokesperson said employees of the automaker’s Seoul office were taken aback by the news. The spokesperson added his trip to Stuttgart had been planned and he departed alone on Monday.
