More hours away from home and more frequent use of public transportation led to increased use of mobile data, a survey said Thursday.

Results from the survey, conducted in September by Korea Telecom's big data center, showed that smartphone users who are away from home for less than two hours during the day use an average 8.9 gigabytes of mobile data per month. The data usage increased to 12.8 GB for people who are outside of their homes for 6 to 8 hours, and to as much as 14.9 GB for those who are out for 16 to 18 hours.

The survey pooled 380,000 LTE rate subscribers in their 30s who live in metropolitan areas.

Data usage also increased for people who use public transportation.
