Speed Skater Lee Sets Korean Record in 10,000m

Korean speed skater Lee Seung-hoon finished fourth in the men's 10,000-meter after posting his personal best as well as a Korean record at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Thursday.

In the 25-lap race at the Gangneung Oval, Lee clocked the record time at 12 minutes and 55.54 seconds. This was 3.01 seconds faster than Lee's gold medal race in the event at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Ted-Jan Bloemen of Canada grabbed the gold medal after clocking an Olympic record of 12:39:77, Bergsma of the Netherlands finished second at 12:41.98 and Nicola Tumolero of Italy came third at 12:54.32.

Lee raced against Moritz Geisreiter of Germany in the third heat. The two skaters were neck-and-neck in the early phase of the heat, but after six kilometers, Lee accelerated to race ahead of Geisreiter and increase his difference with Jordan Belchos of Canada who recorded 12:59.51 in the second heat.

Lee kept his lap times to the low 30s in the last six laps and finally moved ahead of the Canadian skater to finish first among six skaters so far.
